As the days grow shorter and the chill of winter settles in, the season of Advent invites us to pause, reflect, and prepare for the celebration of Christ’s birth. At First Congregational Church of Bonham, we embrace this sacred time of anticipation and welcome you to join us on this journey of hope, peace, joy, and love.

What is Advent?

The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, meaning "coming" or "arrival." Traditionally observed over the four Sundays before Christmas, Advent is a time for Christians to reflect on two key events: the first coming of Jesus as a baby in Bethlehem and His promised return as King.

The origins of Advent trace back to the 4th and 5th centuries, when early Christians prepared for Epiphany—a celebration of Christ’s baptism and the revelation of God’s light to the Gentiles. Over time, the focus of Advent shifted to emphasize Christ’s birth and second coming. By the Middle Ages, the season had become a well-established tradition in the Western Church, marked by prayer, fasting, and worship.

The Advent Wreath: A Symbol of Light

One of the most cherished traditions of Advent is the lighting of the Advent wreath, which dates back to the 16th century. The circular shape of the wreath symbolizes God’s unending love, while the evergreen branches represent eternal life in Christ.

Each Sunday, a new candle is lit, and its meaning draws us deeper into the heart of the season:

  • Hope: The first candle reminds us of the hope we have in Christ’s promises (Romans 15:12-13).
  • Peace: The second candle reflects the peace Christ brings into our hearts and the world (Isaiah 9:6).
  • Joy: The third candle, often pink, celebrates the joy of Christ’s coming (Luke 2:10).
  • Love: The fourth candle signifies God’s love revealed through the gift of His Son (John 3:16).
  • Christ Candle (lit on Christmas Eve): This central white candle represents Christ Himself, the light of the world (John 8:12).

A Time to Prepare

Advent is not just about counting down the days until Christmas; it’s about preparing our hearts to welcome Jesus anew. In the busyness of the season, Advent encourages us to focus on what truly matters: the wonder of Emmanuel, "God with us" (Matthew 1:23).

The season also calls us to reflect on God’s great story of redemption. From the prophecies of Isaiah ("The people walking in darkness have seen a great light" - Isaiah 9:2) to the angel’s announcement to Mary ("Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God" - Luke 1:30), Advent weaves together the threads of God’s faithfulness across generations.

Advent in Our Worship

At First Congregational Church of Bonham, each Sunday of Advent is marked by Scripture readings, meaningful hymns, and a focused message that draws us closer to the heart of God. As we light the candles of the Advent wreath, we are reminded of the light that came into the world through Christ and the promise that the darkness cannot overcome it (John 1:5).

We invite you to join us for this sacred time of worship and reflection. Whether Advent is a familiar tradition or a new experience, it offers a beautiful opportunity to grow in faith, deepen your understanding of God’s love, and prepare for the celebration of Christmas.

The Message of Advent

As we journey through Advent, let us remember the words of the angel to the shepherds: "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord" (Luke 2:10-11).

This season reminds us that the Savior came once in humility and will come again in glory. May our hearts be filled with the hope, peace, joy, and love that only Christ can bring.

Come and experience the wonder of Advent with us. Together, let us prepare to welcome the light of the world.
